How did it go?
Hundreds of primary school children and their teachers were enthralled, engaged and entertained as Valerie Bloom performed her poetry on stage at Peterborough New Theatre. Opening with a fascinating introduction to the Jamaican language, Valerie set the scene beautifully for a wonderful selection of poems, sharing new work from They Sent a Cat to Saturn, alongside old favourites including Sandwich and Pinda Cake.
With her effervescent energy, natural rapport with the audience and warm sense of humour, Valerie captivated pupils, who left the auditorium buzzing before excitedly receiving their own copy of They Sent a Cat to Saturn to take home and keep.
One teacher commented on how heartwarming it was to see pupils' faces light up as they watched Valerie, excited to identify with a performer who looked like them. Other teachers were already asking about next year's programme and whether we would be returning to Peterborough, which of course we will be. Jenni Harrison from Young Writers came to the show, and you can read her blog here.
