Kate Wakeling Workshop

The Children’s Bookshow allocates four free workshops for schools who attend a related theatre performance.

Poet Kate Wakeling will visit your school and delight your class, encouraging them to play with words, get their imaginations fizzing and work creatively to produce their own poems.

Suitable for:
Years 5 and 6

The children got their books today - they were so excited, we put in the book plates that you gave us, the children even took the books outside during playtime today to share the poems with their friends!!

What you need to know

  • Flipchart or whiteboard
  • Pens/pencils for the children
  • A3 paper

About Kate Wakeling

Kate Wakeling is a poet who writes for both children and adults. Her debut collection of children’s poetry, Moon Juice (The Emma Press) is illustrated by Elīna Brasliņa, won the 2017 CLiPPA and was nominated for the 2018 CILIP Carnegie Medal. Kate’s second collection for children, Cloud Soup, came out in 2021. Kate studied music at university and often collaborates with musicians, including as writer-in-residence for Aurora Orchestra. She loves writing scripts for musical performances, and her work has featured at the Southbank Centre, the Barbican, Kings Place and on BBC Radio 3.

On the day

  • Please inform your school receptionist that our artist will be arriving so they can be welcomed warmly.
  • A teacher must be present throughout the workshop.
  • Make sure that all the materials that our artist has requested are ready and available.
  • Please let us know if any of the children have particular requirements, and ensure that their normal carer is present.
  • The offer of a cup of tea is often greatly appreciated!
