Library event 2 with Catherine Rayner

How did it go?

We had a fantastic time with the brilliant author and illustrator Catherine Rayner at Mowbray Gardens Community Library in Rotherham. Catherine performed to four classes from local primary schools in the children's section of this beautiful community library. She read stories, answered some brilliant questions, drew Augustus the tiger live for the children using chalks and ink, and then after a reading of her book Five Bears all the children had a go at drawing a bear following Catherine step by step with fantastic results!

Catherine then visited each school that came to the library and the children worked with her to create their very own Arlo the lion pictures with beautiful collaged manes! Their work will be exhibited at Mowbray Gardens community library over Easter and we hope that children will go back to the library with their families to see their work on display!

Every child was given a free copy of Arlo the Lion who Couldn't Sleep to take home and keep.

Thank you Catherine Rayner, the brilliant team at Mowbray community library and all the schools that took part:
Rockingham Junior and Infant school
Rawmarsh Thorogate Junior and Infant school
High Greave Infant school
St Mary's Catholic Primary

Catherine Rayner

Award winning author and illustrator Catherine Rayner was born in Harrogate and now lives in Edinburgh. Much of her inspiration for her illustration comes from her pets, but the vision for her first picture book, Augustus and His Smile came from watching the tigers at Edinburgh Zoo! Her book, Arlo The Lion Who Couldn't Sleep shortlisted for the 2021 Kate Greenaway Medal and her latest title, Five Bears will be published in June 2022.

Praise of Sylvia and Bird

“Catherine Rayner has a marvellous gift for capturing the souls of animals in a few, rich washes of colour.”
