Every child attending this performance will receive a FREE copy of Otto the Top Dog to take home and keep!
How did it go?
We had such a lovely time with Catherine Rayner at the Newcastle Theatre Royal! Catherine treated the audience of local year 1 and 2 children to an hour of storytelling and drawing, including old favourites like Augustus and His Smile, Ernest and Arlo the Lion Who Couldn't Sleep, and more recent titles like Five Bears and the award-winning Otto the Top Dog!
It was thrilling to watch Catherine draw live too, and see the process of how she brings her characters to life on the page. We also really enjoyed being given a look into a real illustrator's sketchbook, and see how Catherine makes sense of her ideas and her process of making a picture book.
There was lots of laughter and joy as everyone left clutching their very own copy of Otto the Top Dog! Thanks to all who came!
Catherine Rayner Workshop
In this fun and interactive session, the children will have the chance to look at the many different stories Catherine has written and illustrated. She will read the class her latest book, Five Bears and talk to them about how she went about drawing each one. The group will then have the chance to be illustrators themselves. Working with Catherine they will create their own bear with its own unique character and personality.

Catherine Rayner
Award winning author and illustrator Catherine Rayner was born in Harrogate and now lives in Edinburgh. Much of her inspiration for her illustration comes from her pets, but the vision for her first picture book, Augustus and His Smile came from watching the tigers at Edinburgh Zoo! Her book, Arlo The Lion Who Couldn't Sleep shortlisted for the 2021 Kate Greenaway Medal and her latest title, Five Bears will be published in June 2022.
Praise of Sylvia and Bird
“Catherine Rayner has a marvellous gift for capturing the souls of animals in a few, rich washes of colour.”
