Sydney Smith performance

How did it go?

We were so privileged to have the extraordinary author and illustrator Sydney Smith come all the way from Canada to entertain and inspire 700 primary children from Hull. Sydney didn't say a word as he came onto the stage, but simply picked up his paintbrush and started recreating a beautiful snowy city street while noises from the city played in the theatre... It was so atmospheric and so magical to watch this brilliant artist at work.

We had stories like Small in the City and Town is by the Sea, and then more painting! The children loved every minute, and left the theatre enchanted and delighted by what they had seen on stage, and clutching their free copy of My Baba's Garden which they received as they left the auditorium.

Sydney Smith Workshop

Sydney Smith worked with some lucky primary schools after his performance. Using a large roll of paper taped to the floor Sydney asked the children to help him create a map of their neighbourhood. Children drew and coloured in pictures of both real and imaginary buildings, people, animals and even mythical beasts to cut out and stick onto the map!

Praise for My Baba's Garden

It’s an extraordinary book about love and family, full of lyrical writing, and Smith’s illustrations are sublime. An original, heart-squeezing hug of a book.
