Catherine Rayner Performance

How did it go?

950 children and teachers from 13 local primary schools filled Hull's New Theatre this morning, all to see the charming and hugely-talented author and illustrator Catherine Rayner. And what a beautiful, joyful show it was! First Catherine read her book, Augustus and His Smile which brought huge tigery smiles to the audience, and then she showed everyone how she draws Augustus - it's always amazing to see an illustrator draw live, and the children were spellbound as his smiling face took shape on the page. Then the children counted along with Catherine's number-obsessed giraffe Abigail, and were treated to a peek inside Catherine's sketchbook.

Catherine then read for the very first time on stage her latest book creation, Mini and Hardly and the Big Adventure, a very engaging story about two small unicorns desperate to grow up - the children loved it! A short question and answer session was followed by Catherine's beautifully crafted picture book Arlo, The Lion Who Couldn't Sleep - one our favourites at the Bookshow - Catherine treated the audience by showing everyone how she draws Arlo step-by-step, and then finished by reading this lovely story.

The children seemed to love every minute, and went back to school happily clutching their very own copy of Harris Finds His Feet, a gift from The Children's Bookshow.

Catherine Rayner

Award winning author and illustrator Catherine Rayner was born in Harrogate and now lives in Edinburgh. Much of her inspiration for her illustration comes from her pets, but the vision for her first picture book, Augustus and His Smile came from watching the tigers at Edinburgh Zoo! Her book, Arlo The Lion Who Couldn't Sleep shortlisted for the 2021 Kate Greenaway Medal and her latest title, Five Bears will be published in June 2022.

Praise of Sylvia and Bird

“Catherine Rayner has a marvellous gift for capturing the souls of animals in a few, rich washes of colour.”
