Alexis Deacon Performance

How did it go?

Autumn Tour time to draw! There was excitement in the air as we welcomed Alexis Deacon to the stage at the splendid Crewe Lyceum. We were treated to a display of how much emotion and expression Alexis could evoke with just two dots here and a line there, or there, or there perhaps. The children were mesmerised by his character’s changing faces and tickled pink by his series of orange blobs on the big screen, lots of laughter and the applause was deafening.

We were introduced to Ergo, the enlightening new picture book by Alexis with Viv Schwarz and listened and watched as Alexis re-enacted the humorous story of Ergo’s awakening.

Beegu of course made an appearance, with Alexis not only reading Beegu to us (along with Beegu’s voice) but also showing us how she came to be and the process leading to her final form.

Some lovely questions from the audience and just time for each child to collect their free copy of Beegu before heading back to school, feeling inspired and ready to draw.

Alexis Deacon

Alexis Deacon has always loved to draw and has been keeping sketchbooks since he was a small child, when he would often move from playing games with toys into drawing stories about them.

Alexis started work on his first picture book, Slow Loris, while studying illustration at the University of Brighton. He spent many hours in a zoo sketching a slow loris and then created the story of the creature's secret life after the visitors had gone home. Alexis' second book, Beegu, about a lonely baby alien trying to find its mother on Earth, was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal.

Alexis Deacon may well be Burningham's heir apparent . . . Deacon's poignant and understated text is brilliantly served by his illustrations, which carry distant reminders of some of the best illustrators of the last 100 years and yet still remain uniquely his own.
