Catherine Rayner Performance
How did it go?
Catherine charmed 400 school children and their teachers with her lovely stories and utterly amazing illustrations. We were treated to stretchy, stripey Augustus and His Smile, cheeky Solomon Crocodile and Abigail and her obsession with counting, among several others. You could hear a pin drop in the auditorium as Catherine showed the children how she draws Augustus and colours him in with pastels. A lovely, varied morning inspiring children with drawing and reading.
What people said:
The author was a very suitable choice for the age group: she broke up the hour show into shorter segments to try and hold the attention of the younger children. The workshop was brilliant.

Want to help more children attend events like this in the future?
Award winning author and illustrator Catherine Rayner was born in Harrogate and now lives in Edinburgh. Much of her inspiration for her illustration comes from her pets, but the vision for her first picture book, Augustus and His Smile came from watching the tigers at Edinburgh Zoo! This book was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2007.
Praise of Sylvia and Bird
“Catherine Rayner has a marvellous gift for capturing the souls of animals in a few, rich washes of colour.”
